How hockey in Japan is structured
The Japan Ice Hockey Federation (JIHF) publishes senior, youth and women’s competitions. The professional club route is connected to Asia League Ice Hockey; Japan also has the All Japan Championship, university leagues and high-school U18 tournaments.
These are not one open ladder. A professional contract, university admission and high-school enrolment require different sporting, legal and immigration foundations.
Asia League and the All Japan Championship
The last fully published Asia League season, 2025/26, had six clubs: five from Japan and HL Anyang from South Korea. The 2026/27 participants and format should not be carried forward before official publication.
JIHF also publishes the All Japan Championship. It is a separate tournament and does not by itself prove an open national professional league with identical conditions across every team.
University, high-school and women’s hockey
JIHF’s 2025/26 statistics include the Kanto University League, All Japan Inter College Championship, U18 high-school tournaments, Japan Women’s League and women’s junior events.
For an international player, a university or high-school route begins with formal admission. Academic requirements, age, language, tuition, housing, competition eligibility and registration must be confirmed separately. A hockey tryout does not guarantee enrolment.
Choosing a realistic level
Japanese clubs and education teams assess the previous league, skating, decision speed, physical readiness, play away from the puck, role, special teams, current video and verifiable statistics. Numbers without level context are insufficient.
Ask for the exact team, competition and status of the offer. For an education route, also confirm the programme, admission dates and the player’s eligibility to compete.
International players and registration
A single public import limit across all Japanese competitions cannot be confirmed. A professional league, national tournament, university and high school may use different rules.
Contract, salary and conditions
There is no single official salary table. Put the following in writing:
- gross or net amount, currency, payment dates, bonuses and taxes;
- housing, deposit, utilities, meals and transport;
- equipment, sticks, medical care and insurance;
- tryout, injury, termination and national-team release terms;
- who pays for the visa, COE, flights, IIHF transfer and registration.
Verify the legal entity, signatory authority and bilingual interpretation of the agreement. Verbal promises do not replace a signed contract.
Housing and cost of living
Costs vary between Tokyo, Hokkaido, Tohoku and other regions, so one national figure would be unreliable. Ask for the address, room type, rent, deposit, utilities, furniture, arena transport and move-in dates.
For an education route, compare tuition, entry fees, dormitory, food, insurance and transport separately. Calculate the amount left after compulsory costs, not only the promised payment.
Professional player: Entertainer visa and COE
Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs includes professional sportspersons under the possible working status Entertainer. Its standard document list includes a passport, application, photograph and Certificate of Eligibility; additional documents may be required.
An application without a COE is possible but can require more evidence and take longer. A COE makes processing smoother but does not guarantee visa issuance. The receiving club, Immigration Services Agency or Japanese consulate must confirm the correct status.
Education route: Student status
Japan has a separate Student status for education. It is linked to enrolment at an institution, not merely to joining a hockey team. A COE is also part of the standard process.
Before travelling, confirm formal admission, course length, financial requirements, housing, insurance and competition eligibility. Permission for paid activity must not be assumed.
IIHF transfer, JIHF registration and insurance
- International transfer: a move from another national federation requires an IIHF transfer.
- Registration: the receiving team must confirm deadlines and eligibility for the exact competition.
- Immigration: sporting eligibility does not replace lawful residence or work status.
- Insurance: confirm cover for tryouts, training, games, injury and treatment in Japan.
Player documents
- valid passport and photographs required by the consulate;
- signed contract, club letter or formal admission confirmation;
- COE and visa documents for the selected status;
- last hockey registration and information for the IIHF transfer;
- medical records and insurance;
- for a minor: consent, guardian, school and housing arrangements.
The final list is set by the club or institution, JIHF, IIHF, Immigration Services Agency and consulate. Do not buy a non-refundable ticket before the purpose and documents are confirmed.
Recruitment timing and tryouts
Rosters are generally built before the season; late openings depend on injuries, budgets and team changes. University and high-school routes also follow admission calendars.
Before a tryout, confirm dates, format, costs, insurance, housing, contact person, decision criteria and response deadline. Use the EHA tryout checklist.

What are the main senior routes in Japanese hockey?
The professional route is connected to Asia League Ice Hockey, while JIHF also runs the All Japan Championship. The current season format and participants must be checked in official materials.
Can an international player join a university or high-school team?
These are education-based routes. Admission and the rules of the institution and competition come first; a hockey invitation does not replace enrolment or immigration status.
Which visa status may apply to a professional hockey player?
Japan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs lists professional sportspersons under the possible Entertainer status. The club, Immigration Services Agency or Japanese consulate must confirm the correct status and documents.
Does a Certificate of Eligibility guarantee a visa?
No. A COE normally makes processing smoother, but Japan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs states that it does not guarantee visa issuance.
Is an IIHF international transfer required?
Yes when a player moves from a club or federation in another country. A sports transfer does not replace immigration, residence or employment authorisation.
