Getting a hockey tryout in Europe is not as complicated as many players think. But it does require preparation, the right materials and realistic expectations about which leagues may be interested in your level.

This guide explains how European hockey tryouts work, what clubs expect and how you can improve your chances of getting invited.

Who This Guide Is For

  • Players who have sent emails to clubs but received no reply
  • Players who want to understand how European club recruitment works
  • Non-EU players preparing for their first contact with European clubs

1. How European Hockey Tryouts Actually Work

Unlike North American hockey, European clubs rarely hold public open tryouts. The process is more direct and relationship-based:

  • The club invites the player for a trial period (1โ€“7 days of practice)
  • Coaches evaluate the player on the ice and decide whether to offer a contract
  • If both sides agree, a contract is offered and signed

Some lower-division clubs hold tryout camps in June and August, advertised online. These are more accessible for players without agent connections.

2. What You Need Before Applying for a Tryout

  • A complete hockey CV with stats, teams, age, position and passport details
  • Clear salary expectations
  • Availability date for the start of the next season
  • References from coaches if possible

3. How to Contact European Clubs for a Tryout

Most clubs accept inquiries by email. A proper tryout request email should include:

  • Your current team and league
  • A direct link to your highlight video
  • A brief summary of your stats
  • Availability date and salary expectations

Keep the email short and professional. Clubs receive many inquiries each week. An email that requires too much reading will often be skipped.
