How hockey in Kazakhstan is structured

The Kazakhstan Ice Hockey Federation administers national competitions including Pro Hokei Ligasy, Jastar Hokei Ligasy, Qyzdar Hokei Ligasy for women and Tungi Hokei Ligasy for amateur hockey. At multinational club level, Barys is listed in the KHL for 2026/27.

Kazakhstan is not one uniform market. The KHL, national professional league and youth system differ in level, budget, registration rules and requirements for international players.

KHL, Pro Hokei Ligasy and other senior routes

• KHL: Barys is a confirmed participant for 2026/27.
• Pro Hokei Ligasy: Kazakhstan’s national senior championship; verify the current field in the official 2026/27 table.
• Qyzdar Hokei Ligasy: a separate women’s competition.
• Tungi Hokei Ligasy: an amateur route that should not be presented as a professional league.

There is no single verified salary scale or import limit across all competitions. The club must confirm the regulation for its exact league and season.

Youth route: Jastar Hokei Ligasy

The federation identifies Jastar Hokei Ligasy as a youth competition. Exact age eligibility, birth years, teams, format and registration rules must be checked in the 2026/27 documents; older regulations should not be carried forward automatically.

For an international junior, ask the club to confirm the team, role, education, housing, guardian arrangements where required, insurance, international transfer and registration in writing. A camp invitation is not a roster place.

Choosing a realistic level

Clubs assess previous league strength, skating, decision speed, physical readiness, play away from the puck, role, special teams, recent video and verified statistics. Numbers without league context are not enough.

Ask for the exact team and competition, the expected role and the identity of the sporting decision-maker. For a young player, development and realistic ice time can matter more than the club name.

Club requirements and international-player status

Prepare position and shot, birth date, height and weight, citizenship, contract status, current team and league, verifiable statistics, role, video and availability. Goalies should include recent full games and context for their numbers.

Contract, salary and conditions

There is no official unified salary table for Kazakhstani hockey. Compensation depends on league, role, experience, budget and employment status. Record every condition in writing:

• gross or net pay, currency, dates, bonuses and taxes;
• housing, deposit, utilities, meals and transport;
• equipment, sticks, medical care and insurance;
• trial, injury, termination and national-team release clauses;
• who pays transfer, registration, immigration and travel costs.

Verify the contracting entity, signatory and applicable law. Verbal promises do not replace a signed agreement.

Housing and cost of living

Costs differ between Astana, Almaty and other cities, so one national figure would be unreliable. Ask for the address, room type, flatmates, rent, deposit, utilities, furniture, arena distance and transport.

Calculate what remains after tax, rent, insurance, food and travel. If the club only helps locate an apartment, confirm who signs the lease and carries the deposit risk.

Players from EAEU countries

According to eGov Kazakhstan, citizens of Russia, Belarus, Armenia and Kyrgyzstan may work in Kazakhstan under an employment contract without a separate work permit as EAEU citizens.

This does not remove lawful-stay, notification and registration requirements, taxes, medical coverage or hockey eligibility. The club must confirm the complete process before work begins.

Non-EAEU players: visa and right to work

For other foreign citizens, the route depends on passport, contract type and length of stay. eGov Kazakhstan lists C3–C6 work-visa categories, but the applicable category depends on the facts and must be confirmed by the competent authorities.

Before relocation, verify the employer, contract, invitation or visa support, filing location, stay registration, insurance and lawful work-start date.

IIHF transfer, federation registration and insurance

1. International clearance: a transfer from another national association requires an international transfer under IIHF rules.
2. Registration: the receiving club must confirm deadlines and eligibility for the relevant federation or KHL competition.
3. Immigration and employment: sports clearance does not create a right to reside or work.
4. Insurance: confirm written coverage for tryouts, training, games, injury and treatment.

Player documents

• valid passport and proof of citizenship;
• signed contract or verifiable offer with the club’s legal details;
• last registration and international-transfer information;
• medical records and insurance requested by the club;
• employment, immigration and stay-registration documents for the citizenship route;
• for a minor, consents, guardian, schooling and housing arrangements.

The final list comes from the club, league, federation, IIHF and state authorities. Do not book travel until the team, purpose and responsible contacts are verified.

Recruitment timing and tryouts

Most roster building happens before the season; later openings can follow injuries, budget decisions or roster changes. Contact clubs selectively and explain the level and role fit.
