How Slovenian hockey is structured

The Ice Hockey Federation of Slovenia (HZS) administers domestic senior and youth competitions, player registration and transfer procedures. Slovenia also has representation in multinational hockey: Olimpija Ljubljana is listed for the 2026/27 ICE Hockey League season.

The market is compact. League label, training volume, budget and player conditions can differ sharply by club, so the exact team, competition, role and legal status must be verified before travel.

ICEHL, domestic championship, IHL and AlpsHL

• ICEHL: Olimpija Ljubljana is Slovenia's confirmed participant for 2026/27.
• Domestic championship: HZS administers the national senior competition.
• IHL: HZS lists a senior International Hockey League competition in its official statistics system.
• AlpsHL: Slovenian clubs have participated in this multinational route, but the current season's participants and conditions must be verified before presenting it as an available roster route.

There is no single verified import limit or salary scale that applies across all these competitions.

Youth route: U19, U17, U15 and U13

The current HZS competition statistics list IHL U19, U17, U15 and U13. The exact teams, birth-year eligibility, competition format and dual-registration rules are season-specific.

For an international junior, ask the club to confirm the team, expected role, education, accommodation, guardian arrangements where required, insurance, transfer, registration and eligibility in writing. A camp or tryout invitation is not a roster place.

Choosing a realistic level

Clubs assess previous league strength, skating and decision speed, physical readiness, play away from the puck, role, special teams, recent video and verified statistics. Production in a weaker competition does not by itself prove readiness for ICEHL.

Ask the club to identify the exact roster and competition, describe the role and explain how the player fits. For juniors, development plan and realistic ice time are often more important than the league name.

Club requirements and import status

Prepare position and shot, birth date, height and weight, citizenship, contract status, current team and league, verifiable statistics, role, video and availability. Goalies should add recent full games and context for their numbers.

Contract, salary and conditions

There is no official unified salary table for Slovenian hockey. Compensation and benefits depend on competition, role, experience, budget and employment status. Record every condition in writing:

• gross or net pay, dates, bonuses and taxes;
• housing, deposit, utilities, meals and transport;
• equipment, sticks, medical care and insurance;
• trial period, injury, release and termination clauses;
• who pays transfer, registration, permit and travel costs.

A verbal promise does not replace a signed agreement or verification of the contracting entity.

Housing and cost of living

Costs vary by city, season and accommodation type, so a single national figure would be misleading. Ask for the address, room type, flatmates, rent, deposit, utilities, furniture, arena distance and transport.

Calculate what remains after rent, taxes, insurance, food and travel. If the club only helps find housing, confirm who signs the lease and who carries the deposit and early-termination risk.

EU/EEA and non-EU players

EU/EEA and Swiss citizens benefit from free movement rules, but longer stays can still require residence registration, tax and social-security formalities. Hockey registration does not replace them.

A third-country player needs the correct immigration basis. The player and club must confirm the employer, contract, filing route, accommodation, insurance and the lawful date work may begin before relocation.

Single residence and work permit

The Employment Service of Slovenia states that foreign nationals who want to work in Slovenia generally need a single residence and work permit. It is issued by an administrative unit, while the Employment Service gives consent within the procedure.

A willing employer is the starting point. The exact route depends on citizenship and facts of employment; special rules apply to some nationalities and to people with free access to the labour market.

IIHF transfer, HZS registration and insurance

1. International clearance: HZS states that clubs must obtain an international transfer and transfer card through IIHF for foreign players.
2. 2026/27 window: international transfers for players older than 18 may be completed from 1 July 2026 through 15 February 2027.
3. HZS registration: the receiving club must confirm competition eligibility and deadlines before the first game.
4. Immigration: sports clearance does not create a right to reside or work.
5. Insurance: confirm coverage for tryouts, training, games, injury and treatment in writing.

Player documents

• valid passport and proof of citizenship;
• signed contract or verifiable offer with the club's legal details;
• last registration and international-transfer information;
• medical records and insurance requested by the club;
• for non-EU employment, the applicable residence and work documents;
• for a minor, consents, guardian, schooling and accommodation arrangements.

The final list comes from the club, HZS, IIHF process and competent authority. Do not book travel until the team, purpose and responsible contacts are verified.

Recruitment timing and tryouts

Many rosters are built in spring and summer; later openings may arise from injuries, budgets or roster changes. Contact clubs selectively with a clear explanation of level and role fit.
