First establish what you are comparing

A camp invitation and a season offer are different opportunities. Before comparing prices and league names, confirm the team, season, current player status and remaining selection conditions. If one offer concerns only a tryout, keep it as a separate scenario.

Use the club-offer checklist for credibility and documents and the camp and tender guide for status. This article supports the choice after those checks.

Define the objective and non-negotiable conditions

EHA editorial method: before discussing team names, choose the season's main objective: regular competition, specific skill development, preparation for the next level or combining hockey and education. Discuss it with the player.

  • Set a total family budget ceiling and contingency.
  • Define essential school, housing and responsible-adult arrangements for a minor.
  • Confirm eligibility, registration and season-specific documents with the relevant organizations.
  • Mark an unconfirmed essential condition as unknown and request an answer. Missing information is not a positive assessment.

A table for two written offers

For each row, record team A's answer, team B's answer and the supporting document or message. Labels such as proposed, confirmed and needs clarification are more useful than a combined score.

Discuss a role rather than promised minutes

Ask specifically what task the coach sees for the player, the positional competition, how lineup decisions are made and how progress will be discussed. Those answers help evaluate the plan without guaranteeing future ice time.

A stronger league can be useful with a suitable role and support. A more accessible league may provide needed game experience. Neither the league label nor projected minutes decides the question alone; full-game evidence and team context are needed.

Illustrative example: two fictional teams

The player is a 17-year-old forward. The family's objective is development while maintaining school progress. The teams, terms and amounts below are fictional: this is a calculation example, not an EHA case or a league price guide.

Fictional terms and amounts in euros
ConditionTeam ATeam B
StatusConditional season offer; eligibility still needs verification.Conditional season offer; eligibility still needs verification.
Role planHigher competition; clarify game opportunities outside the lineup.Coach described a roster task; minutes are not guaranteed.
SchoolRoad-trip timetable is not yet coordinated with school.Preliminary study plan exists; school confirmation is required.
Housing€600 × 9 months = €5,400.€850 × 10 months = €8,500.
Other costs in this model€2,000 combined for programme, education, travel, insurance and personal spending.€1,200 combined for the same categories.
Total before contingency€7,400.€9,700.
With an illustrative €500 contingency€7,900.€10,200.

If the family's ceiling including contingency is €9,000, team B exceeds it. That does not automatically make A the better choice: school and game opportunities remain unclear. The next step is to resolve A's unknowns and establish whether B has a confirmed revised quote. A possible discount cannot be treated as already secured.

Check an early-departure scenario

For each team, calculate non-refundable spending, the return journey and remaining housing or school obligations. Agree where a minor lives and studies after injury or a team change. Review the agreement before paying.

What to send EHA for a discussion

  • Birth year, position, current team and the player's objective.
  • Available links to verifiable statistics and a recent full game.
  • Both offer summaries: status, projected role, school, housing and costs.
  • The family's budget ceiling, decision timeline and unknown conditions.

Remove passport numbers, bank details and unnecessary personal data before sending. A free initial review helps identify sporting questions and missing information. Detailed video analysis and other paid work are agreed separately; disputed legal terms should be reviewed by a qualified lawyer.

Frequently asked questions

Should we always choose the stronger league?

No. Compare readiness, role, coaching, education and budget. The league name does not determine the best option.

Can we choose by promised ice time?

Discuss the specific plan and competition. A projected role alone does not guarantee future minutes.

How do we compare different monthly charges?

Multiply the charge by actual months and add other mandatory expenses. Account for confirmed coverage and a contingency.

Are the example prices actual tariffs?

No. All teams, terms and amounts are fictional and demonstrate the comparison method only.

Discuss two options

First review the sporting profile and family objective, then identify missing comparison information. Sending an enquiry does not purchase a service or guarantee a team place.
