How hockey in Belarus is structured

The Belarusian Ice Hockey Association (Федерация хоккея Беларуси) has been an IIHF member federation since 1992 and runs the domestic senior championship and youth categories. Since February 2022, however, Belarus's national and club teams have been suspended from IIHF-sanctioned international competitions — see the transfer section below for the current, dated detail on what this does and does not cover, since it materially affects how a move to Belarus would actually work.

The domestic championship

The top domestic league, currently sponsor-branded the Betera-Extraliga, fielded 14 clubs in the 2025/26 season. Metallurg Zhlobin won the title, ahead of Slavutich (based in Smolensk, Russia) and Yunost Minsk in third — per Belarusian hockey media coverage, not the federation's own site directly. Slavutich's presence is notable: a club from Russia, itself also suspended by the IIHF, has competed directly inside Belarus's domestic championship since 2024/25, which suggests cross-border participation in this league is currently arranged outside the standard IIHF-sanctioned framework rather than through it.

Youth hockey

Youth categories are understood to exist alongside the senior championship, in line with typical national-federation structures, but current age-group activity, club count and competitiveness were not independently confirmed for this guide. Verify directly with the federation before treating any youth pathway as active.

Choosing a realistic level

Clubs assess previous league strength, skating, decision speed, physical readiness, play away from the puck, role, special teams, recent video and verifiable statistics — the same general standard applied everywhere on this site. Import limits and market access

No specific published limit on foreign players could be confirmed for the Belarusian Extraliga.

Contract, salary and conditions

No official salary information is published for Belarusian hockey. Put the following in writing before signing:

• gross or net amount, currency, payment dates, bonuses and taxes;
• housing, deposit, utilities, meals and transport;
• equipment, sticks, medical care and insurance;
• tryout, injury, termination and release terms;
• who pays for the work permit, transfer paperwork and federation fees.

Verify the legal entity and signatory authority. Verbal promises do not replace a signed agreement.

Housing and costs

No published cost-of-living data specific to Belarusian hockey clubs was found. Ask for the address, rent, deposit, utilities, furniture, arena transport and move-in dates directly, and calculate the amount left after taxes and compulsory expenses before treating any figure as reliable.

Work and residence: a non-EU market

Belarus is not an EU or EEA member. Based on secondary, non-government sources (not independently confirmed against Belarus's own Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which could not be reached during this review), the general route for a foreign national combines a long-term (Type D) visa with an employer-sponsored work permit, with processing reported at roughly three to six weeks and permits typically valid up to one year, renewable. A visa category covering sport-related purposes is reportedly available.

IIHF status and international transfer — read this first

On 28 February 2022, the IIHF Council suspended Russia's and Belarus's national and club teams from IIHF-sanctioned competitions and stripped both countries of hosting rights, citing Belarus's role in supporting the invasion of Ukraine. The IIHF reaffirmed in February 2025 that reincorporation was "not yet safe" for the 2025/26 season. At its Congress on 25 May 2026, the IIHF reinstated Belarus for three specific lower-tier events only — the Men's U18 top division, Women's Division IV and Women's U18 Division IIIB — while confirming on 30–31 July 2026 that the senior Men's World Championship and World Junior Championship remain closed to Belarus (and Russia) for 2026/27.

What this means in practice is not fully confirmed. None of the primary sources found in this review explicitly state whether the standard IIHF international transfer (ITC) mechanism — the process every other guide on this site treats as a routine step — is currently available for a move into Belarusian domestic club competition. The suspension is consistently described as covering competitions and hosting rights; whether it also blocks routine transfer processing was not confirmed either way.

Recruitment timing and tryouts
