Hockey in Denmark: leagues, imports and work rules

League structure

For 2026/27, Denmark’s principal senior routes are:

• Metal Ligaen — top senior league
• 1. division — second senior and development route

The official Metal Ligaen 2026/27 format has 48 regular-season games per team, starting 28 August 2026 and ending 7 March 2027. Danmarks Ishockey Union publishes current competition rules, club information and the U20 development pathway; exact junior competition formats and age rules must be checked for the current season.

Comparing levels

Level matters more than the country name. Clubs compare pace, age, role, production, video and previous competition.

Where an import can be considered

A league listing is not evidence of a vacancy. The player’s citizenship, age, role and the current DIU rules must be checked for the specific team.

Age and citizenship

Junior players are assessed on development potential, eligibility, education, housing and expected ice time. Senior players need a role they can perform immediately. Citizenship affects administration, not the sporting standard.

EU versus non-EU passport

An EU/EEA passport may simplify the employment route. A third-country national usually needs additional residence or work formalities confirmed before travel.

Transfer, registration, visa and work

1. Transfer: an international move normally follows the current IIHF transfer process.
2. Registration: the club confirms federation and league requirements.
3. Residence: the player needs a lawful basis for the intended stay.
4. Work: the contract and immigration status must permit the activity.

The official New to Denmark portal has a specific “Special individual qualifications – athlete or coach” route. It explicitly covers professional ice hockey players. The club must normally be affiliated through a specialised association under the Danish sports confederation, an advance statement from the relevant association is required, and salary and employment terms must correspond to Danish standards. The exact permit route still depends on citizenship, contract and individual circumstances.

Living costs and recruitment timing

There is no single official monthly cost for a hockey player in Denmark. Housing, utilities, food, transport and insurance vary by city and by the club package. Before signing, get every benefit and player-paid expense in writing and compare the full monthly budget with guaranteed cash salary; accommodation or a car should not be treated as cash salary unless the relevant official scheme allows it.

The main roster-building window is generally April to August. Individual needs can appear later because of injuries, budget changes or roster adjustments.

Stats and video clubs need

• current Elite Prospects and verifiable statistics;
• team, league, role and availability;
• recent highlights with clear identification;
• full-game or full-shift footage;
• citizenship and contract status.

A club should understand the player’s level and role quickly.
