How Finnish hockey is organised

The Finnish system combines professional senior leagues, national competitions administered by the Finnish Ice Hockey Association and a multi-level junior structure. A player must look beyond the league brand: identify the competition organiser, age category, season format, registration rules and the actual role offered by the team.

Division names, groups and participants can change. Verify the 2026/27 season through the association’s official results service and current rules rather than relying on old tables or third-party summaries.

Senior leagues: Liiga, Mestis and Suomi-sarja

• Liiga: a market for players who can immediately improve a defined professional role. Statistics in another top league do not automatically prove a fit for the pace and task required by a Finnish club.
• Mestis: nine teams are officially confirmed for 2026/27, with each playing 48 regular-season games. Mestis confirmed the format and participants on 21 May and 5 June 2026.
• Suomi-sarja: a possible route for the right senior profile, but employment terms and playing status cannot be inferred from the league name alone.

Junior hockey and the U18/U20 route

The association runs U18 and U20 competitions at several levels. Exact age eligibility, movement to an older team, group composition and competition format are governed by current-season documents.

Before a junior relocates, the player and parents should ask the club for:

• the exact team and competition in which the player would be registered;
• the training plan and intended role, without a promise of guaranteed ice time;
• school or education options and the responsible club contact;
• the address, price and rules of accommodation;
• who pays for food, transport, equipment, Player Pass, insurance and the international transfer;
• the safeguards and guardian documents required for a minor.

A place in a U18 or U20 environment does not create an automatic route to senior professional hockey. Assess the daily development environment, credible role and next available level.

What clubs check in a foreign player

Do not apply one supposed import limit to every Finnish competition without reading the rules of the relevant league. A club checks registration rules and also decides whether using a place on a foreign player makes sporting and financial sense.

Goaltenders particularly need recent full games against a comparable standard. For skaters, short highlights should be supported by a full game or full-shift footage.

Pay, benefits and contract terms

There is no single official salary table for every Finnish league and club. EHA therefore does not present unverified ranges as fact. Two teams in the same competition may offer different pay, accommodation, travel, equipment and employment status.

Before accepting, obtain a written breakdown of:

• amount, currency, payment schedule and whether pay is gross or net;
• tax responsibility and who assists with registrations;
• housing address, private or shared room, deposit and utilities;
• food, local transport and travel to and from Finland;
• sticks, skates, protective equipment, sharpening and medical care;
• insurance, Player Pass and international transfer costs;
• trial period, injury, termination and return travel;
• any work duties outside hockey.

“The club provides everything” is not a sufficient term. Every material benefit and obligation should be understood before travel and recorded in the offer or contract.

Living costs and the player budget

Living costs depend on the city, housing type and expenses covered by the club. Statistics Finland publishes official quarterly rent statistics, but those figures do not replace the address and actual price of the offered accommodation.

Build two budgets: the first month and a normal month. The first should include the deposit, travel, temporary accommodation, documents and initial purchases. The normal month should include rent, utilities, food, local transport, phone, equipment, insurance and personal expenses.

EU/EEA and non-EU residence and work

Citizens of EU member states, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland do not need a Finnish residence permit. Migri states that an EU citizen staying for longer than three months must register the right of residence.

For a third-country national, Migri provides a dedicated application for professional athletes, coaches and referees. Do not assume that every hockey agreement qualifies as professional activity; the correct category depends on the actual work and supporting documents.

1. Identify the player’s citizenship and intended length of stay.
2. Obtain a written contract or offer that accurately describes the activity.
3. Ask the club to confirm the immigration route and employer obligations in writing.
4. Check requirements and processing information directly with Migri before travel.
5. Confirm sporting registration separately with the club and association.

IIHF transfer, registration, Player Pass and insurance

1. International transfer: a player moving between national associations follows the current IIHF International Transfer Regulations. The receiving club and associations operate the process, and an existing contract must be respected.
2. Registration: the club checks eligibility for the specific team and competition under Finnish Ice Hockey Association rules.
3. Player Pass (Pelipassi): the association states that a valid pass is required for its competitions. The 2026/27 Pelipassi season runs from 1 May 2026 to 30 April 2027, and the product depends on age and competition.
4. Insurance: Sporttiturva cover can be purchased with the Player Pass. If the pass is purchased without it, the player must check whether their own policy covers injuries in competitive sport.

Before registration, agree in writing who initiates the transfer, purchases the Pelipassi, pays the fees and provides insurance from the first day of training.

Complete document package

• a valid passport and evidence of any second citizenship;
• a current player profile and Elite Prospects link;
• official statistics and previous-club contacts;
• recent video, a full game or full-shift footage;
• current contract status and a release where required;
• the Finnish club’s written offer or contract;
• documents for the relevant immigration process;
• confirmation of the international transfer and registration;
• Pelipassi and proof of suitable insurance cover;
• for a minor, parental consent plus education, housing and responsible-adult arrangements.

Tryouts and approach timing

Finland has no single government or federation window in which a foreign player must contact clubs. Teams set their own recruiting schedules. Prepare early for the following season while clubs are still comparing options; in-season openings may arise from injuries or roster changes.

Do not purchase travel for a “tryout” without written confirmation of:

• the dates, number of practices and any possible games;
• the responsible coach or manager;
• the team and competition assessing the player;
• who pays for ice, accommodation, food, travel and insurance;
• when a decision will be made and what happens after a rejection;
• the lawful immigration basis for the trip and intended activity.

Resume, video and first message

The first approach should let a club understand the player and purpose within one minute. Include name, birth year, position, shot, height and weight, citizenship, current team and league, statistics, contract status, realistic target and availability.

Add one link to a structured hockey resume, a concise video package and a full game. Do not send the same message to every level; explain the specific role the player could fill.

How to verify a club offer

1. Verify the club’s legal identity, team, league and signing contact.
2. Compare the promised role with the roster and standard of current players.
3. Put all pay and benefits in writing.
4. Clarify tax, housing, insurance, equipment, transport and medical costs.
5. Confirm the immigration route before paying for travel.
6. Make sure an existing contract and international transfer will not block registration.
7. Read the injury, trial, termination and return-travel terms.
