01

League position

U20 SM-sarja and U18 SM-sarja are Finland's top two national junior tiers, run by the Finnish Ice Hockey Association (Suomen Jääkiekkoliitto, SJL) below U16 SM-sarja and younger categories. Confirm the current season's groups, format and participating clubs on SJL's own competition pages before acting.

02

Age and registration

SJL defines each junior category by a single birth year, not a two-year band. For the 2025/26 season the published figures were: U20 = born 2006, U19 = 2007, U18 = 2008, U17 = 2009, U16 = 2010. A 2026/27 rules update was adopted in principle in January 2026 but the updated document was not available to verify directly — treat 2026/27 birth years as one year higher than the figures above only as an estimate, and confirm the exact current-season number with the club or SJL before relying on it.

03

What a club evaluates

Clubs assess previous level, skating pace, role, physical readiness, decision-making, full-game shifts and development potential, not highlights alone — the same standard applied across senior hockey.

04

Foreign players under 18 — Finland's own condition

Finland's rule (SJL Kilpailusäännöt §6.7) is more specific than the IIHF baseline: a permanent transfer to Finland for a player under 18 requires the player's guardian to relocate to Finland permanently together with the player, with documents proving the permanent move attached to the transfer application. This is a materially different, and in practice more demanding, condition than some other markets, which may only ask for a guardian/representative appointment without requiring the guardian to relocate. For players aged 15 and under specifically, the domestic transfer window otherwise closes 30 November, except where the player is moving to Finland permanently with a guardian.

Underneath this Finnish condition, the IIHF's own baseline still applies: no transfer fee before age 18, and the general 1 July–15 February transfer-deadline window does not apply to under-18 transfers.

05

Education alongside hockey

Finland's structural equivalent to a dedicated hockey school system is the nationally designated urheilulukio network (roughly 15 upper-secondary schools with a Ministry-granted special educational mandate) plus regional urheiluakatemia sport-academy partnerships, under the Olympic Committee's "kaksoisura" (dual-career) framework. There is no single nationally branded hockey-only school category — some schools publish a hockey-specific line through their urheilulukio status, but this varies school by school and must be confirmed directly with the specific institution.

06

Housing and care

No official SJL housing or billeting model for junior players was found. As with every junior market on this site, housing must be confirmed with the specific club as a separate practical and safeguarding matter: host family or boarding arrangement, responsible adult, room, meals, transport, insurance and emergency contact.

07

Recruitment timing

There is no single universal tryout window publicly stated. Request a real assessment schedule, evaluation criteria and decision date directly from the club.

08

Transfer and registration

If the player was registered abroad, the move requires both the Finland-specific permanent-transfer condition above (where the move is permanent) and the standard IIHF international transfer and SJL registration. The club and SJL must confirm the exact process and who is responsible for each document.

09

Immigration and travel

Finland is EU/Schengen; standard EU/EEA-vs-non-EU rules apply. Migri's dedicated route for athletes, coaches and referees appears aimed at adults earning income from sport, with no minor-specific carve-out found — a non-EU minor's route is more likely family-reunification- or study-based, and this needs direct confirmation with Migri or the consulate before booking travel.

10

Costs and written terms

Do not rely on verbal promises about fees, equipment, housing or travel. Ask for a written breakdown, payment recipient, refund terms and what is conditional on selection.

11

Player package

Send year of birth, position, height, citizenship, current team, league, statistics, Elite Prospects or federation profile, highlights and a recent full game.
