Switzerland Junior Hockey: U21/U18-Elit Guide

League position

U21-Elit and U18-Elit are Switzerland's top junior tiers, tied to National League and Swiss League club organisations, run by Swiss Ice Hockey (SIHF) above U21-Top/A, U18-Top/A and younger categories. Confirm the current season's clubs and format directly with SIHF.

Age and registration

SIHF defines age by a formula (second season-year minus birth year). The most recently published exact table (dated August 2025, for season 2025/26 — no 2026/27 table was available to verify directly) states: U21 = born 2005 and younger; U18 = born 2008–2009 and younger. Applying SIHF's own formula, the 2026/27 figures should shift by one year, but this is a calculation, not a confirmed published table — verify the current-season number with SIHF or the club.

What a club evaluates

Clubs assess skating, pace, skills, role, physical readiness, decision-making, full-game shifts and development potential, not highlights alone.

Foreign players under 18 — a real simplification

SIHF's own rule is unusual and worth understanding precisely: a player under 18 who is not yet playing on a Swiss senior team does not need an international transfer card at all. Registration instead requires a copy of the passport/ID, a written release from the last foreign club, and the last foreign residence address. This is genuinely simpler than an adult's transfer, not stricter — but a parent or guardian's signature is still required on the relevant registration form, and a foreign junior never registered anywhere before needs an additional written parental confirmation (Form T11). No rule requiring the transfer to happen before age 18 was found.

Education alongside hockey

There is no single nationwide SIHF-run school system. Instead, named club/canton partnerships exist: the EVZ Hockey Academy (Zug) with OYM College; Kunst und Sportschule Zürich, partnered with GCK/ZSC Lions and EHC Kloten; the Swiss Women's Hockey Academy, partnered with OYM College and Sportmittelschule Engelberg. Confirm the current arrangement directly with the specific club or school, since these programmes vary by canton and club.

Housing and care

Switzerland is one of the few markets where housing has some official documentation: SIHF's own U18-Elit/U21-Elit training-contract template lists "housing solutions, host family" as an example of an individually negotiated compensation item, and the Women's Academy programme confirms host-family arrangements exist alongside living at home. This remains a club-level, individually negotiated arrangement, not a federation-run, independently vetted billeting programme — confirm the responsible adult, safeguarding contact, room, meals, transport, insurance and emergency contact directly with the club.

Recruitment timing and transfer windows

Transfer windows run 15 April–15 September (main period) and 1 November–31 December ("Jokertransfer," also the international deadline for youth/amateur hockey). There is no single universal tryout window beyond these; request a real assessment schedule directly from the club.

A serious caution: non-EU work permits

Switzerland is outside the EU but bound by the bilateral Agreement on Free Movement of Persons with the EU/EFTA, giving EU/EFTA citizens materially easier access than third-country nationals. A 2016 SIHF directive states that third-country (non-EU/EFTA) nationals cannot be admitted as members of junior or senior teams, or as coaches, under Switzerland's foreign-worker permit system for professional athletes. This source predates a 2019 renaming of the underlying immigration law and must be re-verified against current guidance from the State Secretariat for Migration (SEM) before relying on it — but it is a serious enough caution that a family from outside the EU/EFTA should confirm the current position directly with SIHF and SEM before making any plans.
