Nationell, Regional and Div.1: the differences

U18 is an age category, not a single league. J18 remains a familiar search term; the current regulations use U18.

CompetitionPlace in the systemWhat to check
U18 NationellNational stage after regional qualification24 teams, North and South; 22 rounds. Regional competition determines participants.
U18 RegionalRegional competitionAutumn qualification for Nationell, followed by regional continuation stages.
U18 Div.1 / U18 1Lower regional competitionCheck the exact region for names, groups, promotion and eligibility.

Regional regulations differ. Region Väst is included as an example, not a nationwide rule. Junior Div.1 is separate from senior Hockeyettan.

02

2026/27 age eligibility and format

The 2026/27 U18 Nationell rules specify players born in 2009 or later, with no overage players. A younger player’s participation requires a separate eligibility check.

The published national-stage dates are 15 December 2026–14 March 2027. Each region qualifies six teams by 6 December. Places 1–7 in each group reach the playoffs; places 8–12 qualify for U18 Regional in 2027/28.

03

How to choose a realistic level

EHA assessment: compare skating, decision speed, role, physical readiness and full shifts with the specific team. For U18, relocation readiness and a workable school schedule also matter. A league name and highlights alone are insufficient.

Regional or Div.1 may merit consideration when training, role and terms fit the player. This is an individual assessment, not a promise of ice time.

04

International players and under-18 transfers

SIF §4:7 sets separate checks for minors, including home-federation evidence of playing level, a documented representative and education or vocational training. The rules also provide alternative grounds, including a parent’s relocation for reasons unrelated to hockey.

The receiving club and SIF must confirm the applicable basis and documents before travel. A host family, tryout invitation or school place does not itself establish international-transfer eligibility.

05

School and hockey programme

School admission and team selection require separate checks. A hockey-programme label does not confirm admission, English-language teaching or paid accommodation.

  • School name, teaching language and admission requirements.
  • Compatibility of classes, training and travel to the rink.
  • School costs and a plan if team selection fails or the player changes teams.
06

Housing and support

Record the address, housing period, room, meals, deposit, transport and school-break accommodation in writing. For a minor, name the responsible adult, emergency contact and parental consents.

07

Tryouts and roster selection

Before buying tickets, confirm the team and age group, coach, dates, cost, insurance and decision date. Distinguish a paid camp, training group and assessment for a roster place. The transfer deadline is not a universal recruitment deadline.

08

International transfer and registration

SIF’s 2026/27 §4:7 specifies 1 June–31 January for transfers from a foreign federation, with separate senior-league exceptions. Its general international-transfer page gives a different opening date, 16 May. Confirm the applicable deadline with SIF for the individual move; this guide follows the season regulation.

A player may represent the Swedish club after the international transfer is approved and registered by SIF and IIHF. Check registration history and applicable roster rules as well; citizenship and hemmafostrad status (developed in the Swedish system) are different concepts.

For players with Russian and Belarusian passports

Russian and Belarusian passports: Sweden’s official instructions provide for residence applications by citizens of both countries. This does not confirm team eligibility or permit approval. Age, registration status, international transfer and residence basis are separate checks.

Education route: for residence based on upper-secondary school studies, Migrationsverket specifies an IB programme or an organised international exchange. An ordinary hockey gymnasium must not automatically be treated as a basis for that permit; other possible residence grounds are assessed separately.

Russian non-biometric ordinary passport: Sweden stopped recognising it from 1 October 2026, with a limited transitional exception until 31 December 2026 for certain previously issued visas and permits. Do not automatically apply the Russian document rule to Belarusian passports.

If the player already lives in Sweden, the conditions and validity of their own permit or other residence right matter. Moving from another EU country, a host family or another state’s permit does not itself establish the right to live in Sweden for the entire season.

09

Residence status

Team selection, international transfer and residence status are separate checks. The basis for a stay depends on citizenship and the player’s circumstances. A club invitation is not permission to enter, study or work; check the applicable Migrationsverket requirements.

Season costs: what the budget includes

The reviewed sources provide no verified universal price. Obtain a team- and season-specific budget in SEK, identifying the payer for each item.

  • Membership/team fees, ice, coaching, games and tournaments.
  • Housing, deposit, meals, school and local transport.
  • Equipment, sticks, insurance, medical costs, registration and transfer.
  • Flights, holidays, refunds, injury and early departure.

Separate club-covered costs, family expenses and any EHA service fee. Partial support does not mean a free season.

How EHA helps find a suitable team

Start with a free initial profile screening. We compare the player’s experience, statistics and available video with realistic levels and discuss the family’s goal.

  1. Send the profile. Birth date, position, height and weight, shot, current team and league, statistics and Elite Prospects if available. Add recent full-game links and the jersey number and colour. If video is not yet available, say so.
  2. Explain the goal. Target season, relocation timing, contract status, budget, school and housing needs. Add these details in the form’s “Additional information” field. Passport scans are not needed.
  3. Understand the next step. EHA explains which directions merit consideration, what material is missing and whether further work with the profile is possible.

If we agree to a team search, EHA handles the player presentation and communication with suitable clubs within the agreed scope. We help clarify tryout terms, expenses, housing and school; each option’s availability needs separate confirmation.

Initial screening does not include a full paid game analysis. The scope, price and timing of further services are agreed before work starts. Submitting a profile creates no payment obligation; the club decides selection.

FAQ

Which birth years can play U18 Nationell?

The 2026/27 U18 Nationell rules specify players born in 2009 or later, with no overage players. A younger player’s participation requires a separate eligibility check.

Can an international player join a team?

This depends on sporting fit, the roster and registration eligibility. SIF sets separate international-transfer conditions for players under 18; an invitation alone is insufficient.

Are Nationell, Regional and Div.1 the same level?

No. National and regional competitions occupy different places in the system. U18 Nationell teams qualify through regional competition; junior Div.1 must not be confused with senior Hockeyettan.

How much does a Sweden U18 season cost?

The reviewed sources provide no verified universal price. Obtain a written club-specific budget covering fees, housing, meals, school, insurance, equipment and travel.

Does an invitation include school and housing?

Agree these separately. Confirm the school, admission conditions, language, housing address, meals, transport and responsible adult in writing.

What should I send EHA for team assessment?

Send birth date, position, citizenship, current team and league, statistics, a full game, contract status, goal and budget. EHA assesses the route; the club decides selection.

Can a Russian or Belarusian passport holder play in Sweden?

The passport alone neither confirms nor rules out an individual player’s eligibility. Confirm age, registration status, international-transfer conditions, a valid document and residence basis. Official instructions provide for residence applications by citizens of both countries.

Can any hockey school support a study residence permit?

No. For the upper-secondary study route, Migrationsverket specifies IB or an organised international exchange. If the player has a different residence basis, assess the relevance of this restriction separately.
