01

League position

The CHL (Canadian Hockey League) is the umbrella for three major junior leagues: the WHL, OHL and QMJHL, run under Hockey Canada. Confirm the current season's clubs, divisions and format directly with the CHL or the relevant league.

02

Age and registration

Player eligibility runs from the year of a player's 16th birthday through the year of his 20th birthday. WHL and OHL each cap overage (20-year-old) players at 3 per roster; WHL requires teams to cut down to 3 by 16 October if they enter camp with more. QMJHL's own overage cap was not found on a distinct official page — treat any QMJHL-specific number as unconfirmed and verify directly with the league.

03

What a club evaluates

Clubs assess skating, pace, skills, role, physical readiness, decision-making, full-game shifts and development potential, not highlights alone — the same standard applied across senior hockey.

04

Foreign players — the CHL Import Draft

A foreign (import) player enters the CHL only through the annual CHL Import Draft — one joint draft across all three leagues, not three separate league drafts, with selection order rotating between WHL/OHL/QMJHL. For 2025/26 the import cap was raised from 2 to 3 players per team, with the draft expanding to 3 rounds; the 2025 draft ran 2 July 2025 and 142 players were selected. Clubs are additionally limited to one 16-year-old import per season, non-tradeable during that season. Whether a team can sign an import outside the draft under any circumstance was not found in an official source — confirm directly with the CHL or league before assuming it is possible.

05

A major 2025 change: NCAA Division I eligibility

Since a rule the NCAA Division I Council approved in November 2024, effective 1 August 2025, a CHL player can now retain NCAA Division I eligibility, provided he receives no more than "actual and necessary expenses" (meals, lodging, transport, equipment, coaching, ice time, medical insurance, entry fees) — no salary. This does not apply to NCAA Division III, where CHL players remain ineligible, and a player who signs an NHL contract and later returns to the CHL stays NCAA-ineligible. Per the OHL's own FAQ, a player who leaves before completing his Standard Player Agreement forfeits the league's education package; completing the term first preserves it for later NCAA study. This materially changes the trade-off a family is weighing against an NCAA-track route such as the USA's NCDC, compared with seasons before 2025/26.

06

Education and the tuition package

WHL's own material describes a tuition-and-books package funded for each season played, usable at Canadian institutions. Specific forfeiture conditions (for example withdrawing from classes or falling below a passing grade) appear in a Standard Player Agreement referenced only in third-party legal documents, not on the WHL's own current scholarship page — confirm the exact current terms with the league or team before relying on them.

07

Housing and care — billet families

Housing is billet-family based. Hockey Canada's national Player Billeting Resource Package sets baseline standards: criminal record and vulnerable-sector screening for household members 19 and over, an in-home interview, reference checks, orientation, a private bedroom for the player (or shared only with a teammate, never other household members), a school-attendance obligation for the billet family, and an anti-hazing appendix. Leagues and teams run their own implementation on top of this national framework — the OHL's own prospective-player page confirms billet screening via interview plus a criminal background check and placement only in pre-approved homes.

08

Recruitment timing

The Import Draft (2 July in 2025) sits mid-summer, ahead of main training camps; rosters are otherwise built out through main league drafts earlier in the year and camp cuts in August and September. No single official transfer-window document beyond the Import Draft's own timing rules was found — request the current schedule directly from the club.

09

Immigration and travel

Confirmed via IRCC's own published rule: a study permit is required for any programme longer than 6 months at a designated learning institution. A commonly cited requirement — that a minor under 17 travelling without an accompanying parent needs a Custodianship Declaration naming a Canadian citizen or permanent-resident custodian — could only be verified via third-party immigration-service sites, not IRCC.gc.ca directly, during this check. Whether a billet family can serve as that custodian, and whether a work permit is separately required given a player receives a stipend or education package, was not found in any official source. Verify this section directly with IRCC or immigration counsel before making plans — do not treat it as settled.

10

Costs and written terms

Do not rely on verbal promises about fees, equipment, housing or travel. Ask for a written breakdown, payment recipient, refund terms and what is conditional on selection.

11

Player package

Send year of birth, position, height, citizenship, current team, league, statistics, Elite Prospects or federation profile, highlights and a recent full game.
