U20 DNL and U17: levels and season 2026/27

Official / Verified: DEB lists U20 DNL Division I, II and III, and U17 Division I and II. U20 and U17 are different age categories; the division identifies a level within that category. DNL remains part of DEB’s current U20 naming.

DEB’s announcement of 22 October confirms the next phase from 24 October 2026: U20 Top Division and Qualifikationsrunde, and U17 Meisterrunde. These are competition phases, not additional age categories. Check the selected team’s division and phase rather than relying on “DNL” alone.

Age categories and match eligibility

Official / Verified: DEB’s published age table for 2026/27 lists U20: born 2007, 2008 or 2009 and U17: born 2010 or 2011. U20 covers three birth years; U17 covers two in this table.

These are base age categories. The club and responsible registration office must confirm the player’s eligibility for the specific competition, any permitted exceptions and playing-rights history. Being in the age group does not confirm a roster place or match registration.

Which German junior level fits the player?

EHA Assessment: the target should reflect current competition, team role and recent full-game evidence. There is no automatic conversion from points or a foreign league label to a German division.

• Current role: describe opponents, regular minutes, special-team use and recent changes in role alongside statistics.
• Game evidence: skating, decision speed, puck use under pressure, defensive habits and physical readiness matter alongside highlights.
• Development environment: ask what training group, coach feedback and potential role the club proposes. Playing time remains a selection decision.
• Family readiness: school, language, supervision, housing and budget must fit the actual option.

A lower division with a suitable role may merit consideration; a higher division does not by itself establish the better development route. EHA can give an initial sporting view and explain what still needs assessment.

Under-18 international clearance and registration

Official / Verified: DEB describes a Letter of Approval (LOA) procedure for players under 18. A player born abroad generally needs this clearance even if they did not previously play abroad. The LOA must be signed by the player and a parent or legal guardian and submitted to the DEB registration office.

DEB lists a signed LOA and identity-document copy for a limited application; an unlimited application also requires the completed and signed UTCR form. Agree the transfer type and required documents with the receiving club. German or EU citizenship does not itself remove the international-clearance requirement.

DEB states that under-18 applications incur no additional transfer costs. This must not be read as a free hockey season, housing or waiver of every domestic registration charge. Confirm the complete quote separately.

Ask the club and responsible registration office to confirm the applicable deadline and written match eligibility for the exact date, competition and transfer type. This page does not confirm a universal domestic transfer window for every junior case.

Education alongside hockey

Germany's nationwide "Eliteschule des Sports" brand (43 sites across all sports) has a confirmed ice-hockey site: the Schul- und Leistungssportzentrum Berlin, taking players from grade 7. Separately, Bavaria runs its own distinct state programme — "Partnerzentren des Wintersports" / Stützpunktschule, not the Eliteschule brand — with Realschule Füssen recognised for ice hockey alongside EV Füssen, and a boarding house at neighbouring Gymnasium Hohenschwangau. These are two different systems; confirm which one, if either, applies to a specific club before assuming a school place.

School checklist for the family

EHA practical guidance: request the named school, entry grade, teaching language, admission decision and start date. Compare the school timetable with training and travel; ask about language support and missed lessons. A hockey selection does not itself confirm school admission.

School and education abroad

Housing and care

No DEB-level housing or billeting policy was found. Practice is club-level only: Krefeld has run a boarding house via a youth-welfare partner since 2006; Adler Mannheim's academy has its own residence; Kölner Haie and EHC Nürnberg publicly recruit host families for their Division players. Confirm the responsible adult, safeguarding contact, room, meals, transport, insurance and emergency contact directly with the specific club.

Before accepting accommodation

EHA practical guidance: obtain the address, room arrangements, meals, housing dates and costs, including holidays. Name the responsible adult for a minor, emergency and safeguarding contacts, and the school/rink transport plan. Agree what happens to the accommodation if the player is injured or leaves the team. The examples above do not confirm current bed availability.

Tryout invitation or confirmed place?

EHA practical guidance: agree the club’s assessment schedule separately from registration deadlines. Before booking travel, request the exact team, dates, coach, training sessions, total costs, insurance from the first session and decision date.

• Camp: participation in a paid programme does not itself confirm assessment for a roster vacancy.
• Tryout: the club evaluates the player; clarify what happens if selection is unsuccessful.
• Conditional offer: record the conditions still to be met, such as assessment, documents or registration.
• Confirmed sporting offer: school, housing, immigration and match eligibility still need their own confirmation.

Agree who pays for the return trip and temporary accommodation if the option falls through. EHA can help review the sporting route and questions about terms within the agreed service scope.

For players with Russian and Belarusian passports

Russian and Belarusian citizens must meet visa or other residence requirements; sporting eligibility is established separately. A passport and club invitation do not confirm U20/U17 registration or residence for a full season.

Russian passport: a biometric passport is required for new visa applications and German residence-permit extensions from 1 January 2026. Official instructions preserve use of non-biometric passports with certain valid German visas or permits issued before that date. Check the source for the exception’s conditions; do not automatically apply the Russian document rule to Belarusian passports.

The school route is subject to §16f AufenthG. Confirm the qualifying school and admission, funding, insurance and support for the minor separately. If the player already lives in Germany on another basis, the conditions of their own status matter.

Immigration and travel

The school residence basis in §16f(2) AufenthG normally applies from grade 9 and sets conditions for the international composition of the class and the type of school. The school must be public or state-recognised with an international orientation, or a qualifying school financed outside or mainly outside public funds. A club-linked school does not automatically qualify.

For a minor, separately confirm legal-representative consent, support, housing and funding against consular and immigration requirements. A §16f(2) school permit does not authorise employment; any paid sporting duties require separate clarification.

Full season budget: what to request in writing

EHA has no verified universal price for a German U17 or U20 season. Request a quote for the actual team, school and housing period. Record the payer, what is included, payment dates and refund conditions for every item.

• Hockey: team fees, training, games, tournaments, equipment, sticks and sharpening.
• School: admission requirements, any tuition or boarding charges, materials, language support and local travel.
• Housing: rent or host-family contribution, deposit, utilities, meals, laundry and accommodation during holidays.
• Administration and cover: registration, applicable transfer charges, insurance from the first training day and any travel-document costs.
• Travel and changes: flights, return visits, injury-related expenses, early departure and remaining housing commitments.

Separate one-off payments from monthly costs and record the number of months. Do not treat a verbal “housing included” promise as confirmation that meals, holidays and deposits are covered.

1. Send the profile. Birth date, position, height and weight, shot, current team and league, statistics and Elite Prospects if available. Add recent full-game links and the jersey number and colour. If video is not yet available, say so.
2. Explain the goal. Target season, relocation timing, contract status, budget, school and housing needs. Add these details in the form’s “Additional information” field. Passport scans are not needed.
3. Understand the next step. EHA explains which directions merit consideration, what material is missing and whether further work with the profile is possible.
