Germany Junior Hockey: U20/U17 Player Guide

League position

U20 Division I/II/III and U17 Division I/II are Germany's top national junior tiers, run by the German Ice Hockey Federation (Deutscher Eishockey-Bund, DEB), tied to DEL/DEL2 club organisations. The competition's older "DNL" branding was retired for 2018/19 — use the current Division naming when researching a club.

Age and registration

DEB's Spielordnung (Art. 50) fixes age by the calendar year the season begins, spanning three birth years per tier — wider than some other markets. For 2026/27 (season begins 2026): U20 = born 2007–2009; U17 = born 2010–2011. Recheck this for the exact season you are assessing, since the reference year rolls forward annually.

What a club evaluates

Clubs assess skating, pace, skills, role, physical readiness, decision-making, full-game shifts and development potential, not highlights alone.

Foreign players under 18 — a real simplification

DEB's Spielordnung (Art. 52a) states that for a player who has not yet turned 18, the formal international transfer card is not required — a simple written or electronic confirmation from the player's former national federation suffices, which is a simplification relative to an adult's transfer. A general rule for all minors still requires the permit application to be countersigned by the player's legal representative. Underneath this, the IIHF baseline applies: no transfer fee before age 18, and the general transfer-deadline window does not apply to under-18 transfers. One point that needs direct confirmation with DEB before booking any move: the domestic transfer-window rule (1 June–15 September and 1 December–31 January) does not carry an explicit under-18 exception in the text found, even though the IIHF layer above it waives its own deadline for minors — ask the club how these two rules interact for your specific timing.

Education alongside hockey

Germany's nationwide "Eliteschule des Sports" brand (43 sites across all sports) has a confirmed ice-hockey site: the Schul- und Leistungssportzentrum Berlin, taking players from grade 7. Separately, Bavaria runs its own distinct state programme — "Partnerzentren des Wintersports" / Stützpunktschule, not the Eliteschule brand — with Realschule Füssen recognised for ice hockey alongside EV Füssen, and a boarding house at neighbouring Gymnasium Hohenschwangau. These are two different systems; confirm which one, if either, applies to a specific club before assuming a school place.

Housing and care

No DEB-level housing or billeting policy was found. Practice is club-level only: Krefeld has run a boarding house via a youth-welfare partner since 2006; Adler Mannheim's academy has its own residence; Kölner Haie and EHC Nürnberg publicly recruit host families for their Division players. Confirm the responsible adult, safeguarding contact, room, meals, transport, insurance and emergency contact directly with the specific club.

Recruitment timing

There is no single universal tryout window beyond the domestic transfer periods noted above. Request a real assessment schedule, evaluation criteria and decision date directly from the club.

Immigration and travel

Germany is EU/Schengen; standard EU/EEA-vs-non-EU rules apply. For a non-EU minor attending a club-linked boarding school, the applicable German residence-permit basis appears to be §16f AufenthG (school attendance, including long-term/boarding school), rather than a distinct sport-specific visa, which does not appear to exist as its own category. A minor travelling without both parents is understood to need a notarised consent declaration from all custody holders and a designated person in Germany to exercise parental responsibility during the stay — confirm this directly with BAMF or the consulate, since one of the underlying citations could not be independently re-verified.

Costs and written terms

Do not rely on verbal promises about fees, equipment, housing or travel. Ask for a written breakdown, payment recipient, refund terms and what is conditional on selection.
