League structure
For 2026/27, the current SIHF Game Center lists the principal national senior pathways covered here:
- National League — highest professional level; SIHF currently lists 14 clubs
- Sky Swiss League — second national senior level; SIHF currently lists 10 clubs
- MyHockey League — third national level and highest amateur division; SIHF currently lists 12 clubs
The same SIHF structure also includes U21-Elit, U21-Top, U18-Elit and additional junior levels. Use the current directives for age eligibility, transfers and competition rules.
Comparing levels
Level matters more than the country name. Clubs compare pace, age, role, production, video and previous competition.
Where international players are considered
No label proves a vacancy or eligibility. For every level verify the current SIHF and league directives, player status, roster need, transfer and right to work.
An exceptionally high sporting threshold; current eligibility must be confirmed.
Club need, current directives and player status must be confirmed.
Availability depends on competition rules, status and club conditions.
Age and citizenship
Junior players are assessed on development potential, eligibility, education, housing and expected ice time. Senior players need a role they can perform immediately. Citizenship affects administration, not the sporting standard.
EU/EFTA versus non-EU/EFTA passport
SEM describes a dual system. EU/EFTA nationals have easier access to the Swiss employment market under the Agreement on the Free Movement of Persons, while admission from non-EU/EFTA states is substantially more restricted and subject to labour-market and permit conditions.
Transfer, registration, visa and work
- Transfer: an international move normally follows the current IIHF transfer process.
- Registration: the club confirms federation and league requirements.
- Residence: the player needs a lawful basis for the intended stay.
- Work: the contract and immigration status must permit the activity.
Switzerland is outside the EU. SEM states that cantonal authorities issue permits for EU/EFTA citizens. For non-EU/EFTA nationals, admission is limited; the future employer must satisfy the applicable labour-market requirements and employment conditions. A hockey contract or federation registration does not by itself create a right to work.
General orientation only, not legal advice. Re-check the current season with the club and federation, and immigration rules with the official authority or competent consulate.
Living costs and recruitment timing
There is no single official monthly cost for a hockey player in Switzerland. Housing, insurance, transport and daily expenses vary sharply by canton and by what the club includes. Before signing, get the housing address and cost, utilities, deposit, meals, local transport, insurance, tax handling and every player-paid item in writing, then compare them with guaranteed income.
The main roster-building window is generally April to August. Individual needs can appear later because of injuries, budget changes or roster adjustments.
Stats and video clubs need
- current Elite Prospects and verifiable statistics;
- team, league, role and availability;
- recent highlights with clear identification;
- full-game or full-shift footage;
- citizenship and contract status.
A club should understand the player’s level and role quickly.
EHA cases
EHA places players across European markets. Review the general published cases. A previous transfer is not a guarantee for another player.

Moves between national associations normally use the IIHF process; the club and federation confirm the steps.

No. It may simplify administration, but the club makes the sporting decision.
When should a player apply?
The main window is April to August, with individual openings possible during the season.
