League structure

For 2026/27, the official league and federation sources confirm these principal senior routes:

  • ICE Hockey League — top multinational professional level; the official 2026/27 format has 14 teams and 52 regular-season games per team
  • Alps Hockey League — multinational senior level with the 2026/27 competition active across participating federations

ÖEHV also publishes national competitions, including the Ö Eishockey Liga and current U20/U18 competitions. The ICE Hockey League regular season began on 18 September 2026. Check the current Game Center and season regulations for exact participants, age eligibility and registration rules.

Level matters more than the country name. Clubs compare pace, age, role, production, video and the standard of the previous competition.

03

Where imports are realistically considered

The labels reflect general openness in EHA data. They are not proof of a current vacancy and do not replace current regulations.

Suitable import profiles are considered, but no roster place is guaranteed.

04

Age and citizenship

Junior players are assessed on eligibility, development, education, housing and expected ice time. Senior players need a verified role. Citizenship affects paperwork, not the sporting standard.

05

EU versus non-EU passport

EU/EEA citizenship can simplify employment routes inside the EU. The United Kingdom has separate immigration rules. In every market, sporting import status and the legal right to work are separate checks.

06

Transfer, registration, visa and work

  1. Transfer: an international move normally follows the current IIHF process.
  2. Registration: the receiving club confirms federation and league requirements.
  3. Residence: the player needs a lawful basis for the intended stay.
  4. Work: the contract, permit and immigration status must allow the activity.

The official Migration Austria portal lists professional athletes within the Other Key Workers route. For 2026 it gives professional athletes 20 bonus points and states a statutory minimum of €3,465 gross per month for that route, together with a labour-market test and a 55-point minimum. This is an immigration threshold for one residence/work route, not a statement of hockey market salary and not an automatic permit for every contract.

07

Living costs and recruitment timing

There is no single official monthly cost for a hockey player in Austria. Housing, utilities, insurance, transport and food vary by city and by what the club includes. Before signing, get the housing arrangement, deposit, utilities, insurance, local transport and every player-paid cost in writing and compare the full monthly budget with guaranteed income.

The main roster-building window is generally April to August. Targeted needs can appear later because of injuries, budget changes or roster adjustments.

08

Stats and video clubs need

  • a current Elite Prospects link and verifiable statistics;
  • current team, league, role and availability;
  • recent video with clear player identification;
  • a full game or full shifts;
  • citizenship and contract status.

The club should be able to understand the player’s level and role quickly.

09

EHA cases

EHA places players across European markets. Review the general published cases. A previous move does not guarantee the same result for another player.

Official sources and update date

Verified: 2 October 2026.

Is an international transfer normally required?

Normally yes for a move between national associations; the club and federation confirm the steps.

Does an EU passport guarantee a place?

No. It affects administration, while the club makes the sporting decision.

When should a player apply?

The main window is April to August, with individual needs possible during the season.
