Austria U20i/U18i: junior route and checks

League position

The ÖEHV U20 International League (U20i) and U18 International League (U18i) are Austria's top two national junior tiers, run directly by the Austrian Ice Hockey Federation (Österreichischer Eishockeyverband, ÖEHV), below U17, U15, U13 and U11 championships. Unusually among the markets on this site, U20i and U18i are explicitly cross-border: 2025/26 participants include Austrian club academies (Linz, Graz, Red Bull Salzburg, Vienna Capitals, Villacher SV, Innsbruck) alongside Hungarian and Slovenian clubs. The senior Alps Hockey League (Austria/Italy/Slovenia, already covered on this site) is a separate competition from U20i/U18i, run under its own regulations. Age and registration

ÖEHV defines each junior category by a single birth year. For the 2025/26 season: U20i = born 2006 and younger, U18i = 2008 and younger, U17 = 2009, U15 = 2011, U13 = 2013, U11 = 2015. There is no U16 category — the step below U18i is U17. U20i allows up to three "overage" players per game (born 2005); U18i allows none. Confirm the exact current-season birth years with ÖEHV or the club before relying on them.

What a club evaluates

Clubs assess previous level, skating pace, role, physical readiness, decision-making, full-game shifts and development potential, not highlights alone — the same standard applied across senior hockey.

Foreign players under 18 — Austria's own condition

Austria does not have a Finland-style rule requiring a guardian to permanently relocate as a precondition of a transfer. Instead, ÖEHV uses a status mechanism called Eishockeyösterreicher (EHÖ): a non-Austrian player licensed with ÖEHV clubs for five consecutive seasons before turning 18 is reclassified as domestic rather than a transfer player. A faster route, EHÖ-EU, applies only to EU-citizen players whose family relocated to Austria before the player's 17th birthday, with at least one year of residence and a parent under Austrian social insurance. Neither status is a gate: a family that does not relocate can still complete an ordinary international transfer and get the player licensed — they simply remain classified as an import for club roster-quota and fee-discount purposes, not for eligibility itself.

Separately, ÖEHV's own domestic licensing window runs 1 June to 15 February and explicitly applies to a player never previously registered in Austria, regardless of age; for the U20i/U18i league specifically, the 2025/26 roster-addition cutoff is tighter, 31 January. This matters because it applies on top of the IIHF's under-18 exemption: even though IIHF does not restrict the transfer window for a player under 18, Austria's own licensing rule still closes new registrations after mid-winter.

Underneath both of these Austrian rules, the IIHF baseline applies: no transfer fee before age 18, and the general 1 July–15 February transfer-deadline window does not apply to under-18 transfers.

Education alongside hockey

Austria's federally recognised dual-career sport-school network is built around skiing (the Skihauptschule/Skimittelschule system) — there is no equivalent nationally codified hockey-school system. Instead, hockey education support runs through named, city-specific club academies, each brokering its own school partnership: Eishockey-Akademie Oberösterreich in Linz (with EV Linz, a partner school and a student dormitory; admission is roughly after the winter semester break), Eishockey-Akademie Steiermark in Graz (tied historically to a local dual-career school; the current partnership should be confirmed directly), and Red Bull Salzburg's internal academy system. Arrangements vary and must be confirmed directly with the specific academy.

Housing and care

No ÖEHV federation-level housing or billeting programme was found. The Linz academy bundles a dormitory into its own package; this was not confirmed for the Graz or Salzburg academies. As with every junior market on this site, housing must be confirmed with the specific club or academy as a separate practical and safeguarding matter: dormitory, host family or boarding arrangement, responsible adult, room, meals, transport, insurance and emergency contact.

Recruitment timing

No ÖEHV document states an official league-wide tryout window. ÖEHV runs national-team talent-identification camps for U14/U15 players, but these are national-team selection camps, not club recruitment tryouts. The Linz academy's own admission process runs roughly after the winter semester break. Request a real assessment schedule, evaluation criteria and decision date directly from the club or academy.

Transfer and registration

If the player was registered abroad, the move requires both a standard IIHF international transfer and ÖEHV registration, plus a valid passport (or birth certificate and citizenship proof for a player without one) and a passport photo. The club and ÖEHV must confirm the exact process, and — separately from eligibility — whether the player's status will be recorded as EHÖ, EHÖ-EU, or an ordinary transfer/import for roster-quota purposes.

Immigration and travel

Austria is EU/Schengen; standard EU/EEA-vs-non-EU rules apply. For a non-EU minor, there is no dedicated athlete visa. Two general routes apply: family reunification, which requires the sponsoring parent to already hold a qualifying Austrian residence status (a suspension on some new applications is in effect through 30 September 2026 — re-check before relying on this); or the "Aufenthaltsbewilligung – Schüler" pupil residence permit, which does not require a parent to relocate — an adult in Austria (which can be a host family, school director or boarding-school staff) must be formally entrusted with the player's care via a written parental declaration, alongside school enrolment, accommodation and insurance proof. This is general immigration law, not a hockey-specific rule, and must be confirmed with the embassy, consulate or an immigration professional before travel.

Do not rely on verbal promises about fees, equipment, housing or travel. Ask for a written breakdown, payment recipient, refund terms and what is conditional on selection.
