How hockey in Croatia is structured

The Croatian Ice Hockey Federation (Hrvatski savez hokeja na ledu), an IIHF member since 1992, runs a domestic senior championship, junior and women's competitions. For 2026/27, the official regional-league sources confirm KHL Sisak in the Alps Hockey League and three Croatian clubs in the senior IHL: KHL Medveščak Admiral, KHL Zagreb and KHL Mladost. Croatia also has its domestic federation competitions, but the exact current domestic senior format should be checked directly with HSHL rather than inferred from the regional entries.

This is a market defined by its regional connections rather than an isolated domestic pyramid. Always confirm which specific competition a club is registered for this season before assessing the level.

Domestic championship and two regional leagues

No Croatian club appears in the official 14-team ICE Hockey League field for 2026/27. KHL Sisak is instead confirmed in the Alps Hockey League, while the three Zagreb clubs above are confirmed in the regional IHL.

Youth hockey

The federation runs junior and age-group categories alongside the senior game; recent federation news names youth and women's champions by club, but a detailed breakdown of every age group's current activity was not independently confirmed. Check with the federation before treating any specific youth category as an active, regularly competing group.

For an international junior, ask the club to confirm the team, role, education, housing, guardian arrangements where required, insurance and international transfer in writing.

Choosing a realistic level

Clubs assess previous league strength, skating, decision speed, physical readiness, play away from the puck, role, special teams, recent video and verifiable statistics. Given the split structure, ask specifically which competition — Alps Hockey League, IHL, or the purely domestic championship — the role is actually for, since the three differ meaningfully in level.

Import limits

No current numeric foreign-player limit or roster-points rule was confirmed from the official sources reviewed for the Croatian domestic championship, IHL or Alps Hockey League. Do not carry an old rule or a rule from another competition into 2026/27 without the league or club showing the current regulation.

Contract, salary and conditions

No official salary table was found for Croatian hockey. Do not infer current pay from a club's historical participation in a higher league. Put the following in writing before signing:

• gross or net amount, currency, payment dates, bonuses and taxes;
• housing, deposit, utilities, meals and transport;
• equipment, sticks, medical care and insurance;
• tryout, injury, termination and national-team release terms;
• who pays for registration, the IIHF transfer and federation fees.

EU/EEA and non-EU players

Croatia has been an EU member since 1 July 2013 and joined the Schengen Area on 1 January 2023, so EU/EEA citizens benefit from full free movement without a separate work permit, subject to the usual residence registration. This is one of the few markets on this site where an EU passport gives an unambiguous, current advantage.

A non-EU player needs Croatia's combined stay-and-work permit, issued by the Ministry of the Interior via local police, normally preceded by a labour-market test through the Croatian Employment Service unless an exemption applies (for example an EU Blue Card route). IIHF transfer, federation registration and insurance

1. International transfer: a move from another national federation requires an IIHF international transfer.
2. Registration: the club must confirm deadlines and eligibility for the exact competition — domestic championship, IHL or Alps Hockey League.
3. Work authorisation: sporting eligibility does not replace Croatia's residence and work-permit process for a non-EU player.
4. Insurance: confirm cover for tryouts, training, games, injury and treatment.

Player documents

• EU residence registration, or work-permit documents for a non-EU player;
• last hockey registration and information for the IIHF transfer;
• medical records and insurance;
• for a minor: consent, guardian, school and housing arrangements.

The final list is set by the club, federation, IIHF and Croatian state authorities. Do not buy a non-refundable ticket before entry and documentation are confirmed.

Recruitment timing and tryouts

HSHL published a 2026 player transfer window beginning 15 June 2026. That is a federation transfer period, not a promise that clubs recruit on one common timetable. For a player, early contact and clarity about which competition a role belongs to still matter.
