Hockey in Italy: leagues, imports and work rules

League structure

For 2026/27, FISG confirms three main senior national routes: IHL Serie A inside the Alps Hockey League framework, the separate Italian Hockey League, and IHL Division 1. FISG also runs IHL Women and the Junior Hockey League U19, U16 and U14 competitions.

Confirmed senior framework 2026/27

FISG lists Unterland, Cortina, Gherdeina, Asiago, Merano, Renon and Wipptal in IHL Serie A for 2026/27. The IHL regular season starts on 19 September 2026, then splits into Master and Qualification rounds before the playoffs.

Foreign-player rules and vacancies

FISG 2026/27 rules permit a maximum of four Category B players in IHL Serie A, increased to five only when the fourth and fifth are U22. IHL permits a maximum of three Category B players and only Category A goaltenders. IHL Division 1 does not permit Category B players except Category B U19 players, whose use is unrestricted. These are roster rules, not proof of a vacancy: verify the club’s need, player classification, contract, registration and work permission.

Age and citizenship

Junior players are assessed on eligibility, development, education, housing and expected ice time. Senior players need a verified role. Citizenship affects paperwork, not the sporting standard.

EU/EEA versus non-EU passport

EU/EEA citizenship generally simplifies access to work in Italy, while a player from outside the EU/EEA needs the correct immigration and employment route. FISG separately classifies players for sporting purposes, so immigration status and Category A/B roster status are different checks.

Transfer, registration, visa and work

1. Transfer: an international move normally follows the current IIHF process.
2. Registration: the receiving club confirms federation and league requirements.
3. Residence: the player needs a lawful basis for the intended stay.
4. Work: the contract, permit and immigration status must allow the activity.

FISG explicitly refers non-EU athletes to the Italian Ministry of the Interior procedure for entry and residence permits requested by sports clubs. The EU Immigration Portal also describes the general employed-worker route. The correct sports/employment route, employer authorisation, visa and residence permit depend on the player and contract and must be confirmed before travel.

Transfer deadline: FISG sets 11 January 2027 as the deadline for transfer-card requests and registrations in IHL, IHL Division 1 and youth competitions. IHL Serie A follows the applicable IIHF deadline.

Living costs and recruitment timing

There is no single official monthly “hockey player budget” for Italy. Housing, utilities, food, insurance and local transport vary sharply between hockey cities and by what the club includes. Before signing, get the housing address and cost, deposit, utilities, meals, transport, insurance, tax handling and every player-paid expense in writing.

The main roster-building window is generally April to August. Targeted needs can appear later because of injuries, budget changes or roster adjustments, but the applicable registration and transfer deadlines still matter.

Stats and video clubs need

• a current Elite Prospects link and verifiable statistics;
• current team, league, role and availability;
• recent video with clear player identification;
• a full game or full shifts;
• citizenship and contract status.

The club should be able to understand the player’s level and role quickly.
