How Latvian hockey is structured

LHF administers the senior Optibet Hokeja Līga (OHL), 1. Līga and the national children’s and youth competitions. The 2026/27 OHL season page and 1. Līga regulations are published.

The market is compact, so a division name does not replace checking the actual team, role, budget, contract and eligibility.

OHL and 1. Līga in 2026/27

• OHL: the season page is confirmed, but a separate 2026/27 regulation was not confirmed at verification.
• 1. Līga: Latvian, Lithuanian, Estonian and Ukrainian citizens are not counted in the published five-player foreign limit.

Neither rule proves a vacancy or contract conditions. Obtain the club’s written offer and the current LHF eligibility confirmation.

Youth route and U8–U18 age groups

The Latvian Children and Youth Ice Hockey Championship page for 2026/27 lists U8, U9, U10, U11, U12, U13, U14, U15, U16 and U18. Birth-year eligibility, format and entry rules must be checked in the current-season documents rather than copied from an old table.

For an international junior, the club should confirm the team, age eligibility, expected ice time, education, housing, insurance, a guardian where required, international transfer and registration. A tryout is not a roster guarantee.

Choosing a realistic level

Clubs compare the previous league, speed of decision-making, physical readiness, production in role context, play away from the puck, special teams and video quality. High point totals in a weaker competition do not prove an OHL fit by themselves.

Ask the club to identify the exact team and competition, explain the proposed role and show how the player fits the roster. For a junior, development and expected ice time can matter more than the headline league name.

Club requirements and import status

Prepare position and shot, date of birth, height and weight, citizenship, contract status, current league, verifiable statistics, role, video and exact availability. Goalies benefit from full games and core numbers with team context.

Contract, salary and conditions

There is no official universal salary table for Latvian hockey leagues. Pay and benefits depend on level, role, experience, club budget and contract status. Before accepting, obtain a draft and confirm:

• gross or net amount, payment dates, bonuses and taxes;
• housing, deposit, utilities, food and transport;
• equipment, sticks, medical care and insurance;
• trial period, injury, termination and national-team release;
• who pays transfer, registration, visa and related fees.

An oral promise does not replace a signed document and legal review of the agreement.

Housing and cost of living

Costs vary by city, season and housing type, so one universal figure would be misleading. Ask for the address, type of housing, roommates, monthly rent, deposit, utilities, furniture, distance to the rink and transport.

Compare the amount left after rent, tax, insurance, food and travel, not salary alone. If the club only helps find an apartment, establish who signs the lease and carries the deposit risk.

EU/EEA and non-EU players

There are no general restrictions on employing Union citizens, although residence registration, tax and social formalities can still apply. A third-country national and employer follow a separate route involving an invitation or sponsorship, a visa or residence permit and the right to employment.

PMLP distinguishes short-term employment based on an invitation and a visa carrying work rights from long-term employment based on sponsorship and a residence permit. The employer is responsible for the process; sporting registration does not replace immigration permission.

Russia and Belarus: additional restrictions

Visa and residence applications from Russian and Belarusian citizens are subject to in-depth examination, which can extend processing time. PMLP separately states that employment visas are not issued to Russian citizens; eligible categories and exceptions must be checked under the current rules before signing.

Since 15 July 2025, Latvia has not recognised Russian non-biometric passports for entry, stay or new visa and residence applications. The transition period identified for certain holders of earlier Latvian documents ended on 15 January 2026.

IIHF transfer, LHF registration and insurance

1. International move: national associations process it through the IIHF transfer system.
2. LHF registration: the receiving club checks the application, age, competition and deadlines before the first game.
3. Contract and immigration: a transfer does not create a right to work or reside in Latvia.
4. Insurance: confirm coverage for training, games, injuries, treatment and the tryout period in writing.
5. Minor player: additional documents and IIHF international-transfer rules apply.

Player documents

• valid passport and proof of citizenship;
• contract or official offer identifying the legal club;
• last registration and information required for the international transfer;
• insurance and medical documents requested by the club;
• for non-EU players, visa or residence and employment-right documents;
• for minors, consents, guardian arrangements, education and housing confirmation.

The final list comes from the club, LHF and the immigration authority. Do not book travel before the team, purpose of entry and responsible contacts are confirmed.

Recruitment timing and tryouts

Most roster building takes place in spring and summer, while individual needs can emerge later because of injury, budget or roster changes. Contact clubs selectively and explain why the profile fits that team and role.
