Hockey in Poland: leagues, imports and work rules

League structure

EHA's reviewed league reference links two Polish senior routes:

• TAURON Hokej Liga — the top senior competition.
• 1 Liga / MHL — a second-tier and development route whose age and participation rules must be checked each season.

The Polish federation also publishes junior competitions, including Junior CLJ and age-group categories. Competition names and groups can change, so use the current-season documents.

Comparing the levels

Level matters more than the country's name. Clubs compare pace, age, position, responsibilities, eligibility and the quality of available video.

Where imports are considered

A league page is a search guide, not proof of an opening. Actual access depends on current regulations, roster need, club budget and the player's citizenship, age and registration status.

Age and citizenship

For younger players, game opportunities, development potential and age eligibility matter. For senior players, clubs need a proven role, consistent production and the ability to contribute now. Citizenship affects paperwork and import status, but it does not replace sporting evaluation.

EU and non-EU passports

Citizenship of an EU member state generally provides easier labour-market access than third-country citizenship. It does not guarantee a roster spot or remove hockey registration requirements. Before committing to a non-EU player, the club should confirm a valid immigration and employment route.

Transfer, registration, visa and work

1. Transfer: a move between national associations uses the IIHF International Transfer Card process under the current regulations.
2. Registration: the receiving club confirms the PZHL requirements and the rules of the specific competition.
3. Stay: a third-country national needs a lawful immigration status that permits the intended purpose.
4. Work: the right to work depends on citizenship, immigration status, the contract and any applicable permit or exemption.

When clubs build their rosters

The main roster-building window is April to August. Targeted openings may appear later because of injuries, budget changes or roster performance. The right time to approach a club is when current statistics, a clear profile and recent video are ready.

Statistics and video clubs need

• an Elite Prospects link and verifiable season statistics;
• current club, league, role, special-teams usage and ice time where verifiable;
• short, recent video with clear player identification;
• full shifts or games when requested;
• contact details, passport status and a realistic availability date.
