How hockey in Spain is structured

The Real Federación Española de Deportes de Hielo (RFEDH) runs the men's Liga Nacional de Hockey Hielo, U20/U18/U15 categories, the Copa de S.M. el Rey, and — jointly with Portugal's federation and Andorra — the Liga Ibérica. It is a compact market centred on a handful of mountain, Basque and Catalan clubs.

The latest fully confirmed structure is for 2025/26; the 2026/27 club list and rules should be checked in the official RFEDH annex once published, since membership has changed every recent season.

Liga Nacional and the senior route

The RFEDH's 2025/26 annex lists 9 clubs: Andorra HG, CG Puigcerdà, CH Jaca, Barça Hockey Gel, SH Majadahonda, CH Madrid, CHH Txuri Urdin (San Sebastián), CP Milenio and HC Porto (Portugal). The regular season is a double round-robin over 18 matchdays, followed by a best-of-5 playoff among the top 4 and a best-of-5 final. I could not confirm a separate senior second division — verify this directly with the RFEDH before ruling it out.

The Liga Ibérica runs inside the same regular season: its winner is proclaimed Iberian champion, while the playoff winner among Spain-eligible clubs is the Spanish champion — two separate titles from one schedule.

Youth hockey and the naturalisation-equivalent path

The RFEDH publishes U20, U18 and U15 categories alongside regional and autonomous championships. A player who is not eligible for the Spanish national team by nationality, but who competes in official RFEDH competitions for a Spanish club for four consecutive seasons starting at age 14 or younger, is treated as a Spain-eligible ("Seleccionable") player under the federation's own rules — relevant for a long-term junior placement.

For a minor international player, confirm age eligibility, school, housing, guardian, insurance and parental consent separately. A youth-team place does not replace education or immigration arrangements.

Choosing a realistic level

Clubs assess the previous league, skating, decision speed, play away from the puck, physical readiness, special-teams role, current video and verifiable statistics. Numbers without level context are insufficient.

Compare the offer with the club's actual status, city and schedule. Clarify whether it is a senior contract, a Liga Ibérica-only role, a tryout or a youth-category place.

Import limits

The RFEDH's Normativa de Competiciones sets a precise senior-level rule: a team may use a maximum of 4 "Jugadores No Seleccionables" (players not eligible for Spain) per game, and a non-Seleccionable goaltender occupies 2 of those 4 slots. Under-20 competition allows a maximum of 3; under-18 and below carry no limit.

Contract, salary and conditions

No official salary table is published for Liga Nacional, and the league's small-city footprint points to semi-professional status rather than full-time professional pay. Put the following in writing before signing:

• gross or net amount, currency, payment dates, bonuses and taxes;
• housing, deposit, utilities, meals and transport;
• equipment, sticks, medical care and insurance;
• tryout, injury, termination and national-team release terms;
• who pays for registration, the IIHF transfer and federation fees.

Verify the legal entity and signatory authority. Verbal promises do not replace a signed agreement.

Housing and costs

Costs vary sharply between the league's small mountain towns (Jaca, Puigcerdà) and larger cities (Madrid, Barcelona, San Sebastián), so one national figure would be unreliable. Ask for the address, rent, deposit, utilities, furniture, arena transport and move-in dates.

Calculate the amount left after taxes and compulsory expenses. If housing is promised, the contract should state whether it is free, deducted from salary and who pays the deposit.

EU/EEA and non-EU players

EU/EEA citizens benefit from free movement within Spain and do not need a work permit, though longer stays still require standard registration. Hockey registration with the RFEDH is a separate procedure from any immigration step.

For a non-EU player, the standard Spanish work-and-residence route applies; the exact category depends on contract length, citizenship and the specific club. Confirm the current requirement with a Spanish consulate before signing — do not assume the sporting invitation alone is sufficient.

Licence registration mechanics

The RFEDH registers every player through its federation intranet: a valid passport, a signed liability waiver, a photo and current height/weight are required, and files are validated weekly — an incomplete submission is rejected rather than provisionally approved.

IIHF transfer, federation registration and insurance

1. International transfer: requested by the receiving Spanish club when a player moves from another national federation; the player may not play or even train before the transfer is issued and the RFEDH licence is registered.
2. Domestic club change: if a senior player under an unlimited transfer changes Spanish clubs mid-season or the following season, the new club owes the old club a transfer fee under RFEDH rules — worth confirming before agreeing a move.
3. Registration: the club confirms deadlines and eligibility for the exact competition and category.
4. Insurance: confirm cover for tryouts, training, games, injury and treatment.

Player documents

• valid passport;
• signed agreement or official club letter;
• visa or residence documents if applicable;
• last hockey registration and information for the IIHF transfer;
• medical records and insurance;
• for a minor: consent, guardian, school and housing arrangements.

The final list is set by the club, the RFEDH, the IIHF and immigration authorities. Do not buy a non-refundable ticket before entry and documentation are confirmed.

Recruitment timing and tryouts

Rosters are generally built before the season starts in September; late openings depend on injuries, budgets and the small size of each squad. In a nine-club market, an exact role fit and early contact both matter.
