Hockey in Netherlands: leagues, imports and eligibility

League structure and pathways

For 2026/27, IJshockey Nederland lists Eredivisie as the national senior top competition, followed by Tweede, Derde, Vierde, Vijfde and Zesde divisie. The federation also lists U23, U17, JRU17, U15, U13, U11 and U9 competitions.

Central European Hockey League (CEHL) remains referenced in the 2026/27 federation regulations as a separate external route, including rules on switching between CEHL/Oberliga and Eredivisie. Its final competition setup must be checked on the CEHL site rather than treated as part of the Dutch domestic pyramid.

Comparing pathways

These are separate routes, not one combined league. For the Dutch domestic pyramid, start with Eredivisie and the national divisions; treat CEHL as an external cross-border route whose current setup needs separate verification.

Where international players are considered

No league listing confirms a vacancy or eligibility. IJshockey Nederland requires the international-transfer procedure to be completed before a foreign player is eligible for competition, and the club is responsible for ensuring the player has the legally required residence and work documents.

Age and player status

Junior routes require checks on age, eligibility, education, housing and development. Senior routes focus on role, production, experience and readiness.

Passport and eligibility

Citizenship affects immigration, registration and sometimes import status. It does not guarantee a place or replace league or academic requirements.

Transfer, registration, visa and work

1. Transfer: an international move normally follows the current IIHF process.
2. Registration: the club or institution confirms the applicable rules.
3. Documents: the purpose of travel must match the visa or status.

Dutch, EEA and Swiss nationals can work without a work permit. For most other nationals, the official Dutch government says an employer needs a work route through a TWV or, for work longer than three months, a GVVA combined residence-and-work permit unless an exemption applies. IJshockey Nederland separately requires the foreign player to hold the legally required residence/work documents before even a friendly match.

Living costs, transfer deadlines and recruitment timing

There is no single official monthly “hockey player budget” for the Netherlands. Housing, utilities, insurance, transport and food vary by city and by the club package, so get every benefit and player-paid cost in writing.

For 2026/27, IJshockey Nederland lists 1 September 2026 as the national-transfer deadline for players eligible in the Oberliga, Eredivisie, U13, U15, U17 and U23 competitions, and 1 October 2026 as the deadline to request an international transfer for Eredivisie. Those are registration/transfer deadlines, not a universal recruitment calendar. Prepare early; later roster needs may appear but are not guaranteed.
