How hockey in Lithuania is structured

The Lithuanian federation, Hockey Lietuva, manages the national system, but the senior route is not a simple standalone pyramid. In the latest fully confirmed 2025/26 structure, Lithuanian clubs played in the Baltic Optibet Hockey League (OHL), the Lithuanian champion was determined separately, and First League, youth and women’s competitions were also organised.

Participants and 2026/27 rules should be checked after official publication. A player must confirm the exact competition, legal status of the agreement and registration process, not only the club name.

OHL, Lithuanian championship and the senior route

Participation in OHL does not mean that every Lithuanian competition forms one promotion and relegation ladder. The national championship format and First League membership can change.

Before negotiating, request the exact team, competition, game schedule, role, registration deadline and financial terms. National competition does not by itself prove professional employment status.

Youth and women’s hockey

Hockey Lietuva publishes a youth league and age-group competitions, as well as a women’s championship. Age groups, combined teams and the exact season format should be checked in the official calendar and rules.

For a minor international player, separately confirm age eligibility, school, housing, guardian, insurance and parental consent. A roster place does not replace education or immigration arrangements.

Choosing a realistic level

Clubs assess the previous league, skating, decision speed, play away from the puck, physical readiness, special-teams role, current video and verifiable statistics. Numbers without level context are insufficient.

Compare the offer with the team’s actual competition and schedule. Clarify whether it is professional employment, a tryout, amateur registration, a youth programme or hockey combined with study or outside work.

International players and import limits

A single public import limit covering OHL, the Lithuanian championship, First League and every youth competition cannot be confirmed. Rules can differ by tournament, age group and season.

Contract, salary and conditions

There is no single official salary table. Put the following in writing:

• gross or net amount, currency, payment dates, bonuses and taxes;
• housing, deposit, utilities, meals and transport;
• equipment, sticks, medical care and insurance;
• tryout, injury, termination and national-team release terms;
• who pays for visa, migration formalities, IIHF transfer and federation fees.

Verify the legal entity and signatory authority. Verbal promises do not replace a signed agreement.

Housing and costs

Costs depend on city, housing and club conditions, so one national figure would be unreliable. Ask for the address, rent, deposit, utilities, furniture, arena transport and move-in dates.

Calculate the amount left after taxes and compulsory expenses. If housing is promised, the agreement should state whether it is free, deducted from salary and who pays the deposit.

EU/EEA and non-EU players

EU/EEA citizens benefit from free movement, but longer residence remains subject to applicable Lithuanian registration requirements. Hockey registration is a separate process.

A third-country national needs a suitable migration route. Depending on citizenship, duration and contract, this may involve a national long-stay visa or temporary residence permit; the club should verify the correct procedure through MIGRIS.

Sportsperson route, MIGRIS and Russian passports

Lithuania’s Migration Department publishes services for foreign nationals through MIGRIS, including grounds that may apply to professional athletes. Calling a player an “athlete” in a club letter does not itself prove eligibility; the club must select the correct service and provide the required evidence.

Since 1 June 2025, Lithuania generally does not recognise non-biometric passports issued by Russia for entry, subject to limited exceptions. This does not mean that biometric-passport holders are automatically approved: the visa, entry and employment basis is assessed separately.

IIHF transfer, Hockey Lietuva registration and insurance

1. International transfer: a move from another national federation requires an IIHF transfer.
2. Registration: the club confirms deadlines and eligibility for the exact Hockey Lietuva or OHL competition.
3. Employment and residence: sporting eligibility does not replace immigration formalities.
4. Insurance: confirm cover for tryouts, training, games, injury and treatment.

Player documents

• valid passport meeting entry requirements;
• signed agreement or official club letter;
• MIGRIS, visa or residence-permit documents;
• last hockey registration and information for the IIHF transfer;
• medical records and insurance;
• for a minor: consent, guardian, school and housing arrangements.

The final list is set by the club, Hockey Lietuva, IIHF and immigration authorities. Do not buy a non-refundable ticket before entry and documentation are confirmed.

Recruitment timing and tryouts

Rosters are generally built before the season; late openings depend on injuries, budgets and team changes. In a compact market, early contact and an exact role fit matter.
