What is NAHL and who should consider it?
The North American Hockey League is a USA Hockey Tier II junior league. Players do not pay hockey tuition. That does not mean every applicant will earn a place or that the family needs no budget.
EHA judgement: compare decision speed, skating, off-puck play, contact and consistency against full games from the target team. For goalies, examine opponent quality, shot context, traffic management and rebound sequences. No universal points threshold guarantees selection.
NAHL, USHL and NCDC: the key distinction
USHL is USA Hockey Tier I; NAHL is USA Hockey Tier II. NCDC belongs to USPHL and uses its own Tier II designation. A shared number does not make the rules, financial coverage or individual teams identical. See the comparison of six US junior routes and the NCDC guide.
How to reach NAHL: evaluation to roster
- Prepare birth year, position, current team, league, role, statistics and a recent full game. Include the education objective and timeline.
- Before a camp, clarify whether the coach has evaluated the player, why they were invited, what selection remains and the full trip cost.
- A tender establishes rights within NAHL; it is not a promise of ice time. Check restrictions before another tryout.
- Draft selection and protected-list status require separate clarification of the active roster opportunity.
- An undrafted player can still pursue tryouts. A camp payment does not purchase a roster place.
The official Recruiting FAQ explains rights after a tender or draft selection. Do not assume a player can freely try out with another NAHL team: check the required written permissions under the current rules first.
What does an NAHL season cost the family?
The league confirms ice time, game-related team travel and most equipment are covered. Personal purchases, housing, school and other expenses need a separate quote. This guide does not claim a verified all-in price for every team.
| Expense | Question for family and team |
|---|---|
| Hockey and equipment | Which items are supplied, purchased personally and returned after the season? |
| Billet housing | Monthly charge, actual months, meals, deposit and obligations after a release. |
| School | Tuition, enrolment, course recognition and support during road trips. |
| Insurance and transport | Injury coverage, exclusions, personal flights, local journeys and extra services. |
| Camp and changed plans | Camp fee, travel, hotel, refund deadlines and costs if the player is cut. |
Age and international players
International participation is possible. But a league accepting international players does not establish this player's eligibility or an available import position on a team. Before spending, obtain confirmation for the target season using birth date, citizenship and registration history. Do not treat last year's draft conditions as next season's rules.
League registration, international transfer, school and immigration status are separate checks. A team invitation alone does not authorize entry or residence.
NAHL and NCAA: checking the college route
Alumni advancement establishes that a route exists, rather than the likelihood of admission for your child. Examine recent destinations from the specific team and distinguish an announced commitment, enrolment and actual college competition.
Before choosing the season, ask the NCAA Eligibility Center or college compliance office to review academic records and competition history. NCAA eligibility, recruitment, admission and financial aid are separate decisions.
Billet housing and a roster-change plan
Confirm host-family screening, the responsible adult, transport, medical consent, communication rules and an independent safeguarding reporting contact. Agree where the player lives and studies after an injury, release or trade. See the parent guide for further questions.

Frequently asked questions
Is NAHL free to play?
There is no hockey tuition. Housing, school, insurance, personal travel and additional expenses must be checked separately in a written offer.
Can an undrafted player reach NAHL?
Yes, a tryout route remains possible. A camp invitation and payment do not guarantee a roster place.
Does a tender guarantee ice time?
No. Clarify team rights, selection stages, roster status and release conditions; the tender itself does not guarantee a role or minutes.
Can an international player play in NAHL?
Yes, but individual eligibility, an available position under team and league rules, transfer and immigration status need separate confirmation.
Does a US junior route fit this player?
Send the birth year, position, current team and league, role, statistics, an Elite Prospects profile if available and a recent full game. Include the education objective, family budget and questions about any offer. Tell us if full-game video is not yet available.
A free initial profile check helps identify a sporting direction and missing information. A detailed paid video analysis is a separate service with terms agreed in advance. EHA does not guarantee a roster place, scholarship or college admission.
