02

League position and level

Both leagues are their federation's official second senior tier, not a regional or amateur competition. Maxa liga sits directly below Czechia's Tipsport Extraliga; TIPOS SHL — formally TIPOS Slovenská hokejová liga — sits below Slovakia's top league, per the league's own official site.

03

2026/27 format and schedule

Maxa liga's official competition system confirms 14 teams playing a four-fold round robin (52 games); teams 7–10 enter a pre-playoff, with the top six and the two pre-playoff winners continuing to the main playoffs. TIPOS SHL's official league report confirms the new season begins 16 September 2026, with the two best teams competing for entry to the top level — the detailed schedule and series format follow the published 2026/27 directive.

04

Foreign-player and roster rules — a real difference

This is the one clear published difference between the two: Maxa liga's technical standard states a maximum of six foreign players in a single game, though eligibility still requires a valid contract, domestic registration, player list, IIHF transfer where applicable and immigration status. TIPOS SHL's page states there is no safe universal import number to publish without the current competition directive — the club must confirm in writing how citizenship, registration history, age and roster restrictions apply on the intended match date.

05

Recruitment timing

Neither league publishes a single recruiting window for imports. For Maxa liga, many decisions are made before the season while in-season openings are targeted; for TIPOS SHL, recruiting occurs before and during the season with no guaranteed public window. In both cases, confirm who invited the player, the evaluation criteria and the decision deadline before travelling.

06

Pay, housing and written terms

Neither league publishes one official salary table covering every club. Get gross/net pay, payment dates, bonuses, housing, deposit, utilities, food, travel, equipment, insurance, injury terms, trial period, termination and return travel in writing in both cases before relying on a verbal offer.

07

Residence and right to work

Both Czechia and Slovakia are EU members, so EU/EEA citizens use the standard EU route in either country. Third-country nationals face a separate immigration and employment procedure in each — a club invitation or sports contract does not by itself grant entry, residence or work permission. Verify the applicable official route with Czech or Slovak authorities before travel.

08

IIHF transfer — the same underlying process

Both moves follow the current IIHF International Transfer Regulations when the player moves between national associations. In both leagues, the international transfer does not replace domestic registration, a competition licence, insurance, immigration permission or a valid contract — confirm responsibility for each step and fee.

09

Which one fits your situation

If a published, checkable foreign-player limit matters to your planning, Maxa liga's stated six-per-game cap gives you something concrete to plan around — TIPOS SHL does not offer the same certainty on paper, though that does not mean it is more restrictive in practice, only less documented. Both are neighbouring, similarly resourced second-tier markets with an EU-standard immigration route; the deciding factor in practice is usually the specific club's roster need, not the league label.
