02

League position and level

Both are the official second national professional level below their country's top flight — DEL2 below PENNY DEL, Maxa liga below Tipsport Extraliga. Both are run as licensed professional competitions rather than amateur or regional leagues.

03

2026/27 format and schedule — a near-identical shape

The published numbers land close together: DEL2 confirms 14 participating clubs and a double round robin of 52 regular-season rounds, starting 18 September 2026 and ending 7 March 2027, with pre-playoffs, playoffs and playdowns following the published calendar. Maxa liga also confirms 14 teams and 52 games, played as a four-fold round robin, with teams 7–10 entering a pre-playoff and the top six plus two pre-playoff winners reaching the main playoffs.

04

Foreign-player and roster rules — a real difference

DEL2's public framework confirms the competition format but does not establish one simple foreign-player rule that should be applied without checking current DEL2 regulations and the player's own status — the club must confirm eligibility and roster treatment in writing. Maxa liga is more specific on paper: its technical standard states a maximum of six foreign players in a single game, alongside the usual contract, registration, player-list, transfer and immigration requirements.

05

Recruitment timing

Neither league publishes a single recruiting window for imports. In both, many decisions are made before the season while in-season openings are targeted individually — approach clubs for a defined position and do not pay for travel without a written invitation and terms.

06

Pay, housing and written terms

Neither league publishes one official salary table covering every club. Get gross/net pay, payment dates, bonuses, housing, deposit, utilities, food, travel, equipment, insurance, injury terms, trial period, termination and return travel in writing in both cases before relying on a verbal offer.

07

Residence and right to work

Both Germany and Czechia are EU members, so EU/EEA citizens use the standard EU route in either country; third-country nationals face a separate immigration and employment procedure in each. Germany publishes dedicated official guidance for professional athletes and coaches via its make-it-in-germany.com federal portal; Czechia's route is confirmed via its own residence authorities. In both cases, a sporting offer alone does not grant entry, residence or work permission.

08

IIHF transfer — the same underlying process

Both moves follow the current IIHF International Transfer Regulations when the player moves between national associations. In both leagues, an ITC does not replace domestic registration, a valid contract, insurance or immigration permission — confirm who starts the transfer and pays each fee before travel.

09

Which one fits your situation

On paper these two leagues are unusually close in shape — same club count, same round total — which makes the foreign-player disclosure the most useful real differentiator: Maxa liga gives you a concrete number to plan around, DEL2 does not. Beyond that, the choice usually comes down to language environment, a specific club's role and budget, and which country's work-permit process fits your citizenship more easily.
