HockeyAllsvenskan states plainly that no foreign-player number should be relied on without a binding current source — federation rules apply, and the club separately decides registration, contract, roster and budget; passport status never guarantees a place. Mestis's 2026/27 rule is different in kind, not just detail: clubs need at least 20 of their own contracted players at the start of the season, and a match may include no more than two defined Liiga loan skaters plus two U19–U20 skaters born 2007–2008 — this governs loan players from Liiga clubs, not foreign imports, and should not be read as an import cap.

Recruitment timing

Both are highly selective and neither publishes a single recruiting window for imports. For HockeyAllsvenskan, approach only with recent full-game evidence for a defined role; for Mestis, prepare early since in-season openings may occur but must never be assumed.

Pay, housing and written terms

Neither league publishes one official salary table covering every club. In both cases, get the amount, gross/net basis, payment dates, housing, deposit, food, travel, equipment, insurance, tax help, injury terms, trial period, termination and return travel in writing — calculate guaranteed income minus every player-paid cost.

Residence and right to work

Neither country treats a hockey contract as automatic work authorisation. A player who needs a work permit in Sweden must use the current Swedish Migration Agency athlete route. Finland's Migri has a category for professional athletes, coaches and referees, but the applicant must have a job and meet its conditions — a hockey offer does not automatically qualify. Both requirements can change and must be checked before signing or travel.

IIHF transfer — the same underlying process

Both moves follow the current IIHF International Transfer Regulations when the player moves between national associations. In both leagues, an ITC does not replace domestic registration, a valid contract, insurance or immigration permission — confirm who starts the transfer and pays each fee before travel.

Which one fits your situation

If you are specifically an import player (not a Liiga loan prospect), Mestis's roster rule does not restrict you the way it restricts Finnish loan players — but neither league gives you a number to plan a "chances of a spot" calculation around. Both are genuinely selective Nordic second tiers with broadly similar written-terms and IIHF-transfer mechanics; the real difference in practice is the work-permit route, which depends on your own citizenship, not the league.
